San Jose could get stricter about graffiti, weeds and garbage in downtown

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:42:42 GMT

Facing a colossal backlog of complaints in the thousands from residents about graffiti, unkept lawns and trash, San Jose is set to adopt a pilot program that would result in fines to scofflaws and give more power to code enforcement officers to reduce the blight that is making downtown an eye-sore.Under the city’s current rules, residents are responsible for submitting their own complaints about the blight surrounding buildings and homes. The pilot program — slated to start in August — would instead give that power to code enforcement officers, who would be on the search for downtown businesses and residences that aren’t maintaining their properties.Combined with an increase in department staffing, Mayor Matt Mahan believes the strategy will make a major difference in cleaning up a part of the city that draws a large share of resident concerns about blight.“We know that when we’re just reliant on complaints, we don’t necessarily know what is going on out there and ...

By Valerie Gonzalez | Associated PressMcALLEN, Texas — The mother of an 8-year-old girl who died in Border Patrol custody said Friday that agents repeatedly ignored pleas to hospitalize her medically fragile daughter as she felt pain in her bones, struggled to breathe and was unable to walk.Agents said her daughter’s diagnosis of influenza did not require hospital care, Mabel Alvarez Benedicks said in an emotional phone interview. They knew the girl had a history of heart problems and sickle cell anemia.“They killed my daughter, because she was nearly a day and a half without being able to breathe,” the mother said. “She cried and begged for her life and they ignored her. They didn’t do anything for her.”The girl died Wednesday on what her mother said was the family’s ninth day in Border Patrol custody. People are to be held no more than 72 hours under agency policy, a rule that is violated during unusually busy times. The account is almost certain to raise questions about whet...

On Tuesday, an armada of ships and aircrafts raced against time to locate a missing submersible that disappeared in the North Atlantic with five people aboard on their way to explore the Titanic wreck. The missing craft, named Titan, reportedly had less than two days of oxygen left.As the desperate search continues, planes and ships searching the 10,000 square-mile search area are likely encountering much less famous shipwrecks. There are about 10,000 wrecked vessels in North American waterways, according to an estimate from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. We compiled data on thousands of those wrecks, contained in NOAA’s Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System. It’s not a thorough accounting of every sunken vessel, but the data offers a unique level of detail, such as the name of many of the wrecked boats. The Titanic, which is highlighted on the map as a large white ship, sits on the ocean floor about 12,500 feet below sea level, and about ...

Employees are suing Twitter over tens of millions of dollars in bonuses they say the social media company failed to pay despite promises it would. The lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco claims that in the month’s leading up to billionaire Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company, executives including former finance chief Ned Segal “repeatedly” promised employees that 50% of their 2022 bonuses would be paid. The lead plaintiff, Mark Schobinger, served as Twitter’s senior director of compensation until last month. Lawyers for the plaintiff are seeking class action status on behalf of current and former Twitter employees. Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said the bonuses Twitter owes are in the “tens of millions of dollars.” Twitter, which has disbanded its media relations team, did not respond to a message for comment other than with an automated reply. The company is facing multiple lawsuits from former employees as well...
