Over 100,000 customers still without power in Quebec after ice storm MONTREAL — The blackout caused by this week’s deadly ice storm saw Quebecers restocking their fridges and eyeing alternative accommodations on Saturday as it stretched into a third full day for thousands of residents.Hydro-Québec said roughly 132,000 customers remained in the dark as of 8 p.m. Saturday after the storm sent ice-laden branches crashing down onto power lines, streets and cars. Utility and provincial officials said efforts to restore power will continue, though at a slower pace now that the largest outages have been resolved and the remaining ones mostly lie in less accessible areas. The province also announced some grocery stores could remain open on Easter Sunday — a statutory holiday — to help residents running low on food after the blackout. “Obviously one of the issues (is) people are unable to keep food in their fridge,” provincial Energy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon told a Saturday morning news conference. The temporary measure applies to stores i...

A look at Saints pitchers who could be headed to the Twins While Saints pitching coach Pete Larson is one of the new faces with the team this season, he’s a familiar face for a key component — the impressive group of quality arms that have moved up through the organization along with him.Larson was the pitching coach at Fordham University when the Twins hired him in 2019 as a rehabilitation pitching coach. Following the cancellation of the minor-league season in 2020 due to Covid, Larson served as pitching coach for the Class A Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in 2021 before taking on the same role with the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge last season.“I had some success developing pitchers, and pro teams were looking for coaches who could develop to progress the game a little bit,” Larson said of how he ended up joining the Twins. “They were looking outside the normal realm of former professionals. I talked to a couple of teams, and I thought this was the best fit. It was really weird how well (pitching philosophies) lined up. What I thought and what ...

Timberwolves cruise past San Antonio to set up Sunday seeding showdown with Pelicans For a brief stretch Saturday, it looked like the Timberwolves might fall into a similar trap that’s doomed them for much of the season. The Wolves and the lowly Spurs were tied 35-35 after a quarter in Austin, Texas. But Minnesota found another gear, turned the affair into a 151-131 blowout victory and will be rewarded with a true showdown Sunday at home against New OrleansThe Sunday matinee will determine which seed Minnesota gets for the play-in tournament. Lose and the Wolves finish as the No. 9 seed and need two play-in wins to reach the playoffs. Win and they advance into the far more advantageous No. 7-8 game. The path to the playoffs is at a true fork in the road. But Sunday’s contest would’ve been rendered moot for Minnesota had it not taken care of business against the Spurs (21-59), who sat the majority of their rotational players. This is the time of year when tanking teams take their level of tank to an entirely different level.Still, the rotation San Anto...

Keeler: Know football recruits who want to join CU Buffs? Send Coach Prime your film. Because Deion Sanders ain’t done recruiting his first Pac-12 roster.

Keeler: Know football recruits who want to join CU Buffs? Send Coach Prime your film. Because Deion Sanders ain’t done recruiting his first Pac-12 roster. BOULDER — If one source is a fluke, two’s a pattern. So my ears perked up a bit when a pair of CU Buffs types whispered to me last week that Deion Sanders was looking for, at minimum, 15-20 new players coming out of spring ball. After what came out of Saturday afternoon’s news conference, you start to wonder if that number was a little low.I turned up at the Champions Center on Easter eve to inquire about transfers, and offensive line transfers — the Buffs added another former Kent State blocker, Jack Bailey, a few days earlier — in particular. But when I asked if CU’s big lugs were meeting his standards, Coach Prime just sort of … sat there. He paused. He hemmed. He hawed. After an uncomfortable silence, he said this:“The team that we’re playing with now is not the team that we’re going to play with in Texas (at TCU on Sept. 2) the first game.”Another pause.“Do I need to say anymore?”Nope.Sanders continued anyway.“It’s not gonna be that,” the new Buffs coa...

Rockies’ right-hander Ryan Feltner has the tools, now he needs results

Rockies’ right-hander Ryan Feltner has the tools, now he needs results The tools are there: a 95 mph fastball to set up a solid changeup, a slider and the occasional curveball. The next step for Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner is getting the most out of those tools. He gets his next shot on Sunday afternoon when he’s scheduled to start against the Nationals at Coors Field.“For Ryan, he has to take those segments of games when he pitches well, and those good at-bats, and stack them on top of each other, and not have that variability,” manager Bud Black said Saturday. “He needs to build on things — build on it in games. Not just one game, but in games.”Feltner’s first start of the season at Los Angeles was marred by the inconsistency that plagued him last year as a rookie when finished 4-9 with a 6.03 ERA in 19 starts. Against the Dodgers, Feltner was charged with five runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings.  He struck out seven but it was the five walks and the high pitch count (91 pitches, 53 strikes) that most ...

San Jose Sharks rewind: Home woes were (nearly) Cow Palace-bad, and Quinn talks Karlsson: ‘He’s frustrated’

San Jose Sharks rewind: Home woes were (nearly) Cow Palace-bad, and Quinn talks Karlsson: ‘He’s frustrated’ SAN JOSE – Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl both remember when the San Jose Sharks were a dominant team at home. With a big, deep lineup full of talented and tough players, the Sharks were notorious for setting the tone early on and putting opponents on their heels, typically in front of sellout crowds.“I remember I talked to other Czech guys before I get to the NHL,” Hertl said, “and they were always saying the first 10 minutes at SAP is the hardest building in the NHL.”Things have changed by near-historic proportions. With their 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, the Sharks completed their 40-game slate at SAP Center this season with a dismal 8-21-11 record, matching the franchise mark for fewest wins on home ice in a full season. The Sharks went 8-33-1 in 1992-93 in the second and final year at the Cow Palace in Daly City before they moved into their present home the following season. One of the Sharks’ games as the home team came in Prague in October against the Nashville P...
