MLB star gaining ground in Senate race, poll says

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:23:53 GMT

A recent poll of likely voters has provided an interesting wrinkle in the race for U.S. Senate. In California, the top two vote-getters in the primary advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation, meaning two Democrats often square off in the general election. As things currently stand, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) is expected to be joined by a Democratic congresswoman, though whether that's Rep. Katie Porter (D-Irvine) or Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) remains to be seen. However, if the results of a recent poll by Morning Consult and Politico holds true, a Republican may make the November ballot after all.Former Los Angeles Dodger and San Diego Padre Steve Garvey garnered 15% of the votes in the poll, trailing only Schiff's 26% and edging out Porter's 14% and Lee's 12%.When including likely voters who are leaning toward a candidate but have not yet firmly decided, the results are as follows: Schiff: 28%Garvey: 19%Porter: 17%Lee: 14%No other candidates polled in...

Pianist Larry Vuckovich’s new show pays tribute to jazz giant and old friend

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:23:53 GMT

A conversation with Larry Vuckovich can feel like sneaking backstage at a nightclub to eavesdrop on your favorite musicians.A mainstay on the Bay Area jazz scene for more than six decades, the pianist has spent his career accompanying some of jazz’s most acclaimed artists, while recording an influential body of work as a leader. At 87, he’s an essential link to a rapidly receding era, which he recalls in detail with bon mottes, jokes and insights shared by his colleagues, and he wants to make sure that the giants who inspired and encouraged him get their due.Vuckovich returns to Yoshi’s in Oakland on Dec. 27 for a concert celebrating the centennial of tenor sax titan Dexter Gordon (1923-1990), whose 100th birthday passed quietly last Feb. 27. Experts: Israel’s campaign in Gaza is most destructive in history

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 03:23:53 GMT

By Julia Frankel | Associated PressJERUSALEM — The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, experts say, now sits among the deadliest and most destructive in history. In just over two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its three-year campaign against the Islamic State group. The Israeli military has said little about what kinds of bombs and artillery it is using in Gaza. But from blast fragments found on-site and analyses of strike footage, experts are confident that the vast majority of bombs dropped on the besieged enclave are U.S.-made. They say the weapons include 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) “bunker-busters” that have killed hundreds in densely populated areas. With the Palestinian death toll in Gaza approaching 20,000, the international communit...
