MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid got used to pulling off dramatic comebacks in the Champions League last season. Now it needs to avoid one to keep its title defense going. It will be Liverpool needing to do something magical at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday to reverse a 5-2 loss from the first leg in the round of 16.It definitely won’t be easy — no away team has ever erased a three-goal loss from the first leg in the Champions League. Only five times the team that lost at home rallied in the second leg, with Manchester United the only one to overcome a two-goal deficit in a round-of-16 matchup against Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.Liverpool did manage a huge comeback at home in the 2019 semifinals, rallying against another Spanish club, Barcelona. It had lost 3-0 at the Camp Nou before pulling off a 4-0 win in the second leg at home to keep alive a run that eventually ended with the team winning the trophy. Only three other teams overcame a deficit of three or more goals — Barcel...

Sweden’s PM: Finland likely to join NATO without us

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:22:02 GMT

Turkey’s reluctance to approve Sweden’s NATO candidacy is hampering chances that Stockholm and Helsinki will join the military alliance together, the Swedish prime minister said Tuesday.“It is not excluded that Sweden and Finland will ratify in different steps,” Ulf Kristersson said at a press briefing, according to public broadcaster SVT.The likelihood of this scenario “has increased” in recent weeks, Kristersson added, highlighting the ball was now in obstinate Turkey’s court.Spurred by Russia’s war on Ukraine and the rising threat coming from Moscow, Sweden and Finland officially asked to join NATO last May, and later committed to joining the alliance together. Most members of the transatlantic military alliance quickly signed off on the joint application — except Hungary and Turkey, whose national parliaments have yet to ratify the membership bids.Although Stockholm has taken steps to ease some of Turkey’s concerns — including...

MassDOT expects to deploy more than 3,000 pieces of equipment during late season nor’easter

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:22:02 GMT

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation expects to deploy about 3,000 pieces of equipment during Tuesday’s daylong nor’easter, according to Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. As of 7 a.m., MassDOT already has over 500 pieces of equipment deployed and is updating those numbers quickly.“These late season storms are really tough,” Gulliver said. “When you’re looking out the window and you’re looking at rain, you’re thinking this is going to be easy. It’s not, this is going to deteriorate very quickly as the temperature drops and the snowfall starts.” Gulliver said one of the biggest challenges with storms that start with rain is the roads cannot be pretreated. “When it starts raining and you have warm roadways, pretreatment is ineffective, and that means that when the snow really hits it’s going to ice up very quickly. When you have rates that we are talking about, two inches per hour, our snow plows a...

Billy Williams wants to be a resource for Chicago Cubs players — and it’s all thanks to Buck O’Neil’s influence 60 years ago

Billy Williams found an empty table adjacent to the agility field at the Chicago Cubs spring training complex and grabbed a seat. For the past week, the Baseball Hall of Famer was a staple at Cubs camp. He addressed the team March 6 after being introduced by manager David Ross, who rattled off Williams’ impressive career feats. And each morning, Williams sat in the patio area near the door to the clubhouse, watching as players gathered to stretch and go through their warmup routines before making his way to the main practice field. Most days, someone would stop on his way to say hello and chat with Williams. That engagement was fueled by Williams’ decision to make himself noticeably available to players during workouts. His desire to be a resource stems from when he was in his early 20s and trying to establish his big-league career. Back then, when old-timers games were played, Williams made sure he was never in the clubhouse, preferring to mingle with the former ballplayer...

The start of a winter storm with heavy, wet snow led to hundreds of school closings, canceled flights and some power outages in parts of the Northeast on Tuesday. The storm’s path included parts of New England, upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.
